Energy Storage

What a BESS Actually Does for a Site

Storage is often described as backup, which undersells it. On a commercial site a battery system spends most of its life doing something more valuable than waiting for an outage - moving energy between the hours when it is cheap and the hours when it is not.

Peak Shaving

Peak Shaving

Discharging stored energy during demand peaks so recorded maximum demand, and the charges tied to it, stays lower.

Time-of-Day Arbitrage

Time-of-Day Arbitrage

Charging when tariffs are low and discharging into expensive time-of-day windows.

Diesel Displacement

Diesel Displacement

Covering interruptions from stored energy instead of starting a diesel set every time supply drops.

Frequency Support

Frequency Support

Fast response to frequency deviation, on a timescale conventional generation cannot match.

Load Balancing

Load Balancing

Smoothing sharp load steps that would otherwise stress transformers and switchgear.

Voltage Regulation

Voltage Regulation

Holding voltage within tolerance at weak grid connection points.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What size battery system does a site need?

Sizing follows the load profile and the objective. A system built to trim demand peaks is specified differently from one intended to carry a site through outages.

Can storage be added to an existing solar plant?

Usually yes. The existing inverter and protection arrangement determines how cleanly it integrates and whether AC or DC coupling is the better route.

What capacities are available?

The GENSTOR range covers 261 kWh and 1 MWh for commercial and industrial sites, with MEGA GENSTOR at 5 MWh for utility-scale applications.
